Meeting of Nordic and Balkan Researchers in Islamic Studies in Skopje

On May 18-19, 2024, the Meeting of Nordic and Balkan Researchers in Islamic Studies, organized by the Center for Advanced Studies in cooperation with the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) and the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Skopje (Faculty of Shkencave Islame) took place in Skopje. The event focused on “Trends in Islamic Education among Old and New European Muslim Communities” and featured the participation of 16 researchers.

The meeting was inaugurated by Shaban Sulejmani, the Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences in Skopje, and was moderated by Ahmet Alibašić, a professor at the Faculty of Islamic Studies at the University of Sarajevo.

Key discussions centred on general trends in Islamic higher education in different European countries. Researchers examined advancements in Islamic studies, issues of positioning and vulnerability, and the challenges of teaching Islam in liberal societies and secular universities.  The expectations of imams in Europe towards educational institution was also addressed.

The participants had an opportunity to visit Islamic institutions and organizations as well as historical places in Skopje and Tetovo.
