Invitation to the Book Discussion: “On Muslim Democracy” by Andrew F. March
The Faculty of Political Sciences, University of Sarajevo, invites you to a discussion about the book “On Muslim Democracy” by Andrew F. March, Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Visiting Professor at Harvard University.
The book explores the reconciliation of Islamic political theory and democracy, focusing on the ideas and political practice of one of the most prominent contemporary Islamic political thinkers and politicians, Rached Ghannouchi. It presents a unique perspective through primary source essays translated into English and a philosophical dialogue between Ghannouchi and a Western political philosopher. The book examines the key challenges, opportunities, and dilemmas of democratic experiments in Muslim societies, particularly in the aftermath of the Arab Spring.
During the book talk, Prof. March will share his interpretation of the challenges of Islamic political theory and democracy, as well as his experiences engaging with Ghannouchi both as a political philosopher and as a politician who played a pivotal role in Tunisia's democratic transition.
