Beyond individual practice, Islam outlines principles for family roles, professional conduct, and broader community interactions. However, an increasing number of young Muslims in Western nations are distancing themselves from the faith. Pew’s Religious Landscape Study (2018) reveals that roughly 24% of individuals raised as Muslims in the U.S. no longer identify with Islam in adulthood—a notable rate of disaffiliation as compared to other faiths. While countries like the UK, France, Germany, and Canada currently report lower rates of disaffiliation, these figures are gradually rising, particularly among the younger generations. This reality is alarming and calls for an evidence-based, deeper exploration of the various factors influencing their religious identity. Societal influences, family dynamics, and the cohesion of Muslim communities play a significant role in countering this trend. To address this issue, we must adopt a nuanced approach to religious socialization (tarbiyah). This paper provides a comprehensive guide to understanding the challenges Muslim youth face and explores effective strategies for tarbiyah. It will also highlight gaps in existing literature and suggest areas for future research on the religious upbringing of Muslim youth. Gaining insight into these factors is crucial for community leaders, parents, and educators to effectively support the well-being of Muslim youth in the home, school, mosque, and beyond.
